Steps:
1. Choose File>Place... ; then browse an image from your drive.

2. Select the "Type" tool from the toolbox and write something on the picture. [Oatmeal Font with 72pt size is used here] masking text 3

3. Select the text with Selection tool and choose Type>Create Outlines

4. Again select the text and choose Object>Compound Path>Make

5. Now select both the picture and the text then choose Object>Clipping Mask>Make. A window may be appeared if the text font is not simple. Click YES. masking text 7
